Baseball legend Tommy Lasorda got a taste of very real power in Pomona
The 81-year-old legend was standing on the starting line of Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, looking down the asphalt alley. One thousand feet of track stared down the two drivers strapped into their Top Fuel cars. Earplugs were in. Cameras flashed as the two cars pulled up to the line.
Race officials and pit crews flanked the legend. Before the throttles popped, before gobs of torque and 14,000 combined horsepower kicked in, he could feel the thunderous rumble shaking the ground on which he stood. Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda of the hometown Los Angeles Dodgers had seen power on deck, but nothing like this.
